PART 5: Kind CEO Gave Poor Begger His $1M Card… What She Did Next Was More Shocking

Part 5: The Brother in the Shadows

The message remained on Ethan’s phone.

YOU HAVE 72 HOURS.

FIND YOUR BROTHER.

OR ARIANA DIES.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Rain poured over the three of them as the burning remains of the old house crackled behind them.

Ethan read the message again.

Then again.

His jaw tightened.

“They have Ariana.”

Ariana immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You don’t know that.”

“If they had me, they wouldn’t be sending you a warning.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“She’s right.”

Ethan turned toward him.

“You think this is a bluff?”

“I think whoever sent that message wants you to believe Ariana is in immediate danger.”

“Why?”

“To make you do something.”

Ethan looked down at the black card in his hand.

“Find my brother.”

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.”

Ariana stared at the darkness beyond the burning house.

“Then we need to find him.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

She almost laughed.

“After everything we’ve survived, you’re not seriously expecting me to sit at home while you search for a brother you didn’t even know existed.”

“I don’t want you involved.”

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

Ethan stared at her.

Ariana stepped closer.

“If someone is using my life to control you, then I’m already involved.”

Marcus interrupted.

“We need somewhere safe.”

Ethan nodded.

“Where?”

Marcus looked toward the road.

“I know a place.”

They left the burning property minutes later.

Marcus drove for nearly two hours without saying where they were going.

The roads became narrower.

The city lights disappeared.

Eventually they reached an old farmhouse hidden between tall trees.

The building looked abandoned.

Marcus unlocked the door.

Inside was a small living room, a kitchen, and several bedrooms.

Ariana looked around.

“Who owns this place?”

Marcus removed his coat.

“No one.”

Ethan frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It belonged to a man who disappeared twenty years ago.”

Ariana looked at him.

“Another person connected to Helix?”

Marcus nodded.

“Everyone connected to Helix eventually disappears.”

That sentence stayed in Ariana’s mind.

She couldn’t sleep.

Neither could Ethan.

Around three in the morning, Ariana found him sitting alone at the kitchen table.

He was staring at the black card.

She quietly sat beside him.

“You haven’t slept.”

“Neither have you.”

She smiled faintly.

“I’ve had worse nights.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Are you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Of dying?”

Ariana shook her head.

“Of losing you.”

Ethan looked down.

“I don’t understand any of this.”

“Neither do I.”

“I thought I knew who I was.”

“So did I.”

Ethan reached for her hand.

“Maybe we’re not supposed to know yet.”

Ariana squeezed his fingers.

“Then we’ll find out together.”

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then Ethan’s phone vibrated.

A new message.

This time there was no text.

Only a photograph.

It showed Ariana sleeping beside him.

Ethan’s face went pale.

The photograph had been taken moments earlier.

Someone was inside the farmhouse.

He immediately stood.

“Stay here.”

Ariana followed.

“No.”

They checked every room.

Nothing.

Every window was locked.

Every door was secure.

Marcus searched the property.

No one was there.

Then Ariana noticed something.

The photograph had been taken from inside the kitchen.

From the exact position where Ethan had been sitting.

She looked at the floor.

There were no footprints.

“No one entered.”

Ethan stared at the photograph.

“Then how did they take it?”

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

“Camera.”

They searched the room.

Behind an old smoke detector, Marcus found a tiny lens.

He removed it.

“This wasn’t installed recently.”

“How old?”

Marcus examined it.

“At least fifteen years.”

Ethan stared at him.

“So they’ve been watching this house for fifteen years?”

Marcus nodded.

“Which means they knew we’d come here.”

Ariana looked at Ethan.

“Then we’re already playing their game.”

Suddenly the farmhouse phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The phone was old.

Disconnected.

It shouldn’t have worked.

Ethan slowly picked it up.

“Hello?”

A voice answered.

“You’re wasting time.”

Ethan recognized it.

The same mysterious man from the previous call.

“Where is my brother?”

A soft laugh.

“Closer than you think.”

“Who are you?”

“You’ll know soon.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because your grandfather started something your father couldn’t finish.”

Ethan tightened his grip on the phone.

“What did he start?”

The voice became quiet.

“A family.”

The line went dead.

Ethan stared at the receiver.

Ariana looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus answered.

“I think it means Ethan’s brother isn’t the only person they’ve been hiding.”

Before anyone could respond, headlights appeared outside.

A vehicle stopped near the farmhouse.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

“Stay inside.”

Three men stepped out.

They weren’t wearing uniforms.

They carried rifles.

Ethan looked at Marcus.

“Helix?”

Marcus nodded.

The front door exploded inward.

Gunfire filled the room.

Ethan pulled Ariana behind a wall.

Marcus fired back.

One attacker fell.

Another rushed through the doorway.

Marcus tackled him.

The third man ran toward the back entrance.

Ariana grabbed a heavy lamp and struck him across the head.

He collapsed.

For several seconds, everything was silent.

Ethan looked at Ariana.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Marcus searched the attackers.

One had a phone.

Another carried a photograph.

Marcus picked it up.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He handed it to Ethan.

It showed Ethan’s mysterious brother.

But he wasn’t alone.

He stood beside Ariana’s mother.

And beside them was a younger version of Robert Vale.

On the back was a date.

2008.

Ariana stared.

“That was before I disappeared.”

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.”

She looked at the photograph again.

“Why was my mother with him?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Then one of the captured men suddenly laughed.

Ethan turned.

“What’s funny?”

The man looked directly at Ariana.

“You still don’t know.”

“Know what?”

He smiled.

“Your mother wasn’t protecting you.”

Ariana froze.

“She was protecting him.”

He pointed toward Ethan.

“She was protecting Ethan.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“From what?”

The man’s smile disappeared.

“From your grandfather.”

Marcus immediately moved toward him.

“Who is your grandfather?”

The man laughed.

“Ask Nathaniel.”

Then he bit down.

Marcus reacted instantly.

“Stop!”

But it was too late.

The man’s body went limp.

Ariana stared in horror.

“What just happened?”

Marcus checked his pulse.

“Poison capsule.”

Ethan looked at the dead man.

“They’re willing to die to protect this secret.”

Marcus nodded.

“That tells us we’re getting close.”

The next morning, they received another message.

This time, an address.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Ethan’s brother standing outside an old train station.

Underneath it were the words:

12 HOURS LEFT.

Ethan stood immediately.

“We’re going.”

Marcus shook his head.

“It could be a trap.”

“Everything is a trap.”

“Exactly.”

Ariana picked up her coat.

“Then let’s walk into it.”

Marcus looked at both of them.

Finally, he nodded.

They drove to the station.

It had been abandoned for years.

Broken windows covered the walls.

Old signs hung from rusted poles.

The place was completely empty.

Ethan stepped onto the platform.

“Where is he?”

A voice answered from behind him.

“Right here.”

Ethan turned.

The young man stepped out of the shadows.

For the first time, Ethan saw his face clearly.

It was like looking into a mirror from another lifetime.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same expression.

Except for the scar running across his left eye.

Ariana stared at him.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Ethan couldn’t speak.

“You know my name.”

“I know everything about you.”

“Who are you?”

The young man stepped closer.

“My name is Daniel.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Daniel what?”

The man smiled.

“Daniel Carter.”

Ethan stared.

“You’re my brother.”

Daniel nodded.

“Half brother.”

Ariana stepped forward.

“Who is your mother?”

Daniel looked at her.

“You already know.”

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

Ariana’s face went pale.

“But that would mean…”

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother gave birth to both of us.”

Ethan stared at Ariana.

“Then how…”

Daniel interrupted.

“Because you were never brothers by blood.”

Silence.

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What?”

Daniel walked toward him.

“That’s the part everyone lied about.”

He pointed toward Ariana.

“She and I share the same mother.”

Then he pointed toward Ethan.

“You don’t share our father.”

Ethan looked confused.

“Then why do I look like you?”

Daniel smiled.

“That’s the question.”

He reached into his coat and pulled out a file.

Inside were medical records.

DNA reports.

Photographs.

Birth certificates.

Ethan took the first page.

His eyes widened.

“These aren’t real.”

Daniel shook his head.

“They are.”

Ethan read the report again.

His hands began shaking.

“Genetic compatibility…”

He couldn’t finish.

Daniel looked at him.

“Your DNA was modified.”

Ariana stared.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“Your grandfather didn’t simply build Helix.”

“He built something else.”

Ethan’s voice was barely audible.

“What?”

Daniel looked toward the abandoned tracks.

“A program.”

“What kind of program?”

“A program designed to create people who could be controlled through genetic conditioning.”

Ariana felt sick.

“And Ethan?”

Daniel looked at him.

“He was the first successful subject.”

Ethan stepped backward.

“No.”

“You were taken from your mother when you were a baby.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Your father tried to stop it.”

“Why don’t I remember?”

“Because they erased your memories.”

Ethan stared at Daniel.

“What about you?”

Daniel’s expression became darker.

“I was the second.”

Ariana looked between them.

“So you were both experiments?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Ethan’s voice trembled.

“Then why did they separate us?”

Daniel looked at Ariana.

“Because she wasn’t part of the experiment.”

Ariana froze.

“Then why was I involved?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Because your DNA was the key.”

“The key to what?”

“The control system.”

Ariana shook her head.

“I don’t understand.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Your grandfather discovered that certain genetic markers could be used to control behavior.”

Ethan stared.

“And Ariana?”

“Her DNA could neutralize it.”

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s why Helix wanted her.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Ariana looked horrified.

“So my mother spent twenty years hiding me because…”

“Because if Helix found you, they could control every person they had created.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“How many?”

Daniel looked away.

“We don’t know.”

“How many?”

Daniel finally answered.

“Thousands.”

The silence was overwhelming.

Ethan stared at the tracks.

“My grandfather created thousands of people?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Power.”

Ariana whispered:

“And the vault?”

Daniel nodded.

“The vault contains their identities.”

“All of them?”

“All of them.”

Ethan looked at the black card.

“And this?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s the master key.”

“Why did my father give it to me?”

“Because he knew you would eventually find Ariana.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why?”

Daniel stared at Ariana.

“Because your meeting wasn’t an accident.”

Ariana’s heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The day you saved Ethan on the sidewalk wasn’t random.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Someone arranged it.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your entire meeting was planned.”

Ariana shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel pulled out another photograph.

It showed Ariana helping the homeless veteran.

But there was something she had never seen before.

A man stood in the background.

Watching her.

The same man who had later collapsed in front of Ethan’s car.

Ariana stared.

“He was part of it?”

Daniel nodded.

“He was sent to make sure Ethan noticed you.”

Ethan felt sick.

“So the whole thing…”

“Was engineered.”

Ariana stepped backward.

“My kindness was real.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Saving Ethan was real.”

“Yes.”

“But they arranged for us to meet.”

“Yes.”

Ariana looked at Ethan.

For the first time, doubt entered her eyes.

“Then how much of our lives was actually ours?”

Ethan couldn’t answer.

Suddenly Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at Ethan.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“They found us.”

Gunshots erupted from the far end of the station.

Daniel pushed Ariana down.

“Run!”

Men poured onto the platform.

Marcus fired back.

Ethan grabbed Ariana’s hand.

Daniel shouted:

“There’s a tunnel beneath the station!”

They ran.

Bullets struck the walls around them.

Daniel opened a hidden door beneath an old maintenance hatch.

They descended into darkness.

The door slammed shut.

For several seconds, they could hear gunfire above.

Then silence.

Ethan leaned against the wall.

“Who were they?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Helix.”

Marcus frowned.

“How did they find us?”

Daniel slowly looked toward Ariana.

She immediately understood.

“Me.”

Daniel nodded.

“They’ve been tracking you since you were seventeen.”

Ariana’s face went pale.

“How?”

Daniel pointed toward her wrist.

Ariana looked down.

A tiny scar was visible beneath her bracelet.

She had never paid attention to it.

Daniel whispered:

“Because they implanted a tracker inside you.”

Ariana stared in horror.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s been there for twenty years.”

Ethan stepped toward her.

“Can we remove it?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s not only a tracker.”

Ariana’s face went white.

“What else is it?”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“It’s a trigger.”

Ariana’s voice trembled.

“A trigger for what?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“For the same system that controls Ethan.”

Ethan stared at him.

“What happens if they activate it?”

Daniel slowly answered:

“They can make Ariana kill you.”

Nobody spoke.

The tunnel became completely silent.

Ariana stared at Ethan in horror.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why they need her alive.”

Ethan stepped toward Ariana.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m telling you the truth.”

Ariana began crying.

“I would never hurt you.”

“I know.”

“But what if I can’t control it?”

Ethan took her hand.

“Then I’ll find a way.”

Suddenly the lights in the tunnel came on.

One by one.

At the end of the passage stood an old man.

Nathaniel Carter.

Ethan’s grandfather.

Alive.

He looked at Ethan.

Then Ariana.

Then Daniel.

And smiled.

“You’ve finally brought them all together.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my family.”

“No.”

“You killed my father.”

Nathaniel’s expression remained calm.

“Your father is alive.”

Ethan froze.

“Where?”

Nathaniel looked at Ariana.

“Ask her.”

Ariana stared at him.

“Why me?”

Nathaniel smiled.

“Because your mother told you the truth.”

Ariana shook her head.

“My mother told me nothing.”

“Exactly.”

Nathaniel slowly raised a small remote control.

Ariana suddenly felt a sharp pain in her wrist.

She screamed.

“Ethan!”

Ethan grabbed her.

Nathaniel pressed another button.

Ariana’s eyes suddenly changed.

She looked at Ethan.

But the warmth was gone.

Her expression became empty.

Nathaniel smiled.

“Now.”

Ethan stepped backward.

“Ariana?”

She raised her hand.

A weapon appeared beneath her coat.

Daniel shouted:

“RUN!”

Ethan looked at Ariana.

She was pointing the gun directly at him.

Her finger slowly moved toward the trigger.

“Ethan…” she whispered.

Then her voice changed.

“I can’t stop.”

The gun fired.

And the entire tunnel exploded into darkness.
