A Beloved Supercouple Reunites—But With a Twist

Soap fans are buzzing after an iconic supercouple came back together—but it’s not how you’d expect.
Carly Spencer, played by Laura Wright, and Sonny Corinthos, played by Maurice Benard, have been General Hospital’s dominant supercouple for the past 25 years. They have married and divorced each other four times, the last round ending in 2022 after Carly found Sonny in bed with Nina Reeves, played by Cynthia Watros. Since then, fans have been clamoring for a 5th try for the duo, but GH hasn’t reunited them despite many teases that it could be on the horizon.
This week, Benard took matters into his own hands and had Wright as a guest on his State of Mind with Maurice Benard podcast for the second time, bringing the duo back together in an emotionally charged way that their fans are sure to love. The last time he had her as a guest, it produced his second-most-watched episode ever, following only the tribute episode he did for Tyler Christopher after his passing. Benard is convinced that this episode will do even better than her first one did, and after viewing, it’s not hard to see why.
Last time they delved deeply into Wright’s childhood and divorce, but this time Benard shifted the focus to where she is now in her life, and the series of Sacred Space zooms she has been holding for fans. She explained why she is doing them, what she hopes to accomplish, and even her plans to take them even farther in the future. “What I want to do is show people and hold a space for people to realize they get to change their lives., Wright said, “What you really just need is to give yourself some grace and actually see the amazing things that you’re accomplishing and doing in your life.”
“A sacred space is being with people and empowering them, helping people move from a victim mindset to a powerful mindset. It’s really holding space for people and showing them that they have the power within themselves to create the life they want.”
They also talked about the show and laughed about how contentious things were between them when she first came on as Carly. Wright joked about their first meeting and how the powers that be at ABC and GH had “strong-armed” him into attending. “Yes!” Benard emphatically confirmed while laughing. Things got better between them, and Benard says about her now, “One thing about Laura Wright, I’m going to give it up right now about her as an actress. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, if I were a director, she’s a director’s dream. She’ll do anything. She’ll do it this way. She’ll do it that way. She does it any way. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her…yell at anybody. It’s always professional.”
