Mamdani LEGALIZES “Illegal Vendors”… as 19 Grocery Stores LEAVE NYC FOREVER
In a shocking collapse that has left longtime New Yorkers furious and scrambling for their next meal, beloved grocery stores across New York City are slamming their doors shut one after another. Why? Because hordes of unregulated, unlicensed street vendors have completely taken over the sidewalks, blocking entrances, littering garbage everywhere, and selling unrefrigerated food right in front of struggling legitimate shops.
What was once a vibrant city of corner bodegas and family-run supermarkets is turning into a lawless open-air bazaar where rules don’t apply — especially if you’re an illegal immigrant vendor protected in the name of “equity and justice.” Meanwhile, hard-working store owners who pay sky-high rents and taxes are being driven out of business. This isn’t progress. This is urban meltdown in real time.

Look at the madness unfolding on the streets. Garbage piles up with rotting fruit, broken egg cartons, and cardboard boxes scattered like a war zone. Vendors hawk eggs that have never seen the inside of a fridge, counterfeit knockoffs, and mystery goods from who-knows-where — all while blocking sidewalks so customers can’t even reach the real stores behind them.
One devastated owner, Marvin Pru of Food Fair Fresh Supermarket, stood in front of his store and painted a heartbreaking picture: “They don’t have no refrigeration and they’re selling multiple different items. I even seen vendors selling eggs, not refrigerated, a mess of boxes. They blocking the sidewalk. They don’t pick up their garbage.” He’s begged city officials for help, but his desperate cries have fallen on deaf ears. “We love the community. We invested in the community. We want to be part of the community. We need help.” Without urgent action, he warns his supermarket will be forced to close its doors for good.
This isn’t an isolated story. Across neighborhoods, legitimate businesses paying thousands in monthly rent are being crushed by competitors who pay nothing — no rent, no taxes, no regulations, and now, thanks to new city council bills, virtually no fear of real punishment.

The city council’s so-called “solution” to vendor problems? Decriminalize street vending. Selling goods without a license is no longer a criminal offense. No more arrests. No more scary police visits that make vendors “run scared” and abandon their merchandise. Now it’s all civil fines — which many simply ignore or treat as the cost of doing business in a broke city desperate for any cash.
One vendor with 18 years on the streets proudly expanded to four locations and complained that cops used to ticket him for tiny violations like being one foot too close to a crosswalk. Now? He feels free. But for store owners, it’s a nightmare. On notorious Canal Street, vendors have completely taken over both sides of the sidewalk. You can barely walk, let alone enter the legitimate businesses lining the street.
These vendors aren’t just selling a few snacks. Many hawk counterfeit goods, fake designer items, and unrefrigerated food that would make any health inspector faint. When cameras roll, they freak out and hide their faces — because deep down, they know exactly what they’re doing is wrong.

The insanity goes deeper. New York is a sanctuary city, and critics say the real motive behind decriminalization is crystal clear: protect illegal immigrants from getting any criminal record that could alert ICE and speed up deportation. A vending summons used to show up in systems that might trigger immigration checks. Now? It’s just a slap-on-the-wrist ticket. No jail. No criminal history. Keep selling those unrefrigerated eggs and fake bags in peace.
Meanwhile, the Department of Sanitation can still issue huge fines and seize unsafe food — but enforcement is spotty at best. Permits for legal vending can take up to 10 years to obtain, so the city created a massive waiting list… then basically stopped enforcing the rules. The result? Everyone who wants to vend now has an unofficial “permit” as long as they’re willing to risk an occasional fine. It’s a perfect money-making scheme for a cash-strapped city while destroying the rule of law.

Legitimate grocery stores can’t compete. They pay full rent, comply with health codes, refrigeration requirements, taxes, and insurance — while the guy outside sells the same (or counterfeit) items cheaper with zero overhead. No wonder shelves are emptying and “For Lease” signs are popping up everywhere.

This street vendor explosion is happening under the watch of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the progressive darling who just hit his first 100 days in office. His approval rating sits at a lukewarm 48% — lower than Eric Adams at the same point — despite big promises on affordability, universal childcare, and housing.
Mamdani released a “racial equity plan” and a “true cost of living” report claiming a median family with kids needs a staggering $159,197 a year to get by in New York. The report highlights how white families are supposedly coping better than Black, Hispanic, and AAPI families, pushing more “equity” initiatives like implicit bias training for teachers and lessons on New York’s history of “colonization, exploitation, and racial oppression.”
The Trump administration’s Department of Justice has already taken notice, with the Civil Rights Division eyeing the heavy DEI focus. But on the streets, ordinary New Yorkers are living the real consequences: closed grocery stores, blocked sidewalks, and a feeling that the city is spiraling into lawlessness.

Even the city council speaker is pushing back against Mamdani’s wild budget ideas, including a proposed 9.5% property tax hike that she says would hammer Black communities and small businesses. Over 5,000 small businesses — many Black-owned — closed last year, costing 20,000 jobs. Her alternative focuses on efficiencies and reforms instead of soaking the rich and corporations.
Yet Mamdani insists he needs Albany’s approval to tax the wealthiest New Yorkers harder. Critics warn this is a death spiral: raise taxes on the rich, they leave, then raise taxes on whoever is left… until the middle class vanishes and the city still can’t balance its books.
The vendors themselves claim they’re just “providing for their families” and serving tamales or whatever without fear of criminal court. The Street Vendor Project says there are 23,000 vendors citywide, and last year the NYPD issued over 3,600 vending-related criminal summonses before the rules changed.
But for families trying to buy safe, refrigerated food or simply walk down the sidewalk without tripping over boxes and trash, this “equity” feels more like chaos and decline.
New Yorkers are exhausted. They voted for bold change, but many now see overpromising and under-delivering. Polls show mixed feelings — some praise Mamdani’s energy and focus on childcare, others call it manipulative because he can’t deliver on affordability when businesses are being strangled by unregulated competition.
The writing is on the wall. When legitimate grocery stores keep closing because they can’t compete with lawless sidewalk sellers, what comes next? Higher taxes to fund “free” government-run groceries? More empty storefronts covered in graffiti? A city where walking to buy milk feels like navigating a crowded flea market?
This isn’t the vibrant, opportunity-filled New York of legend. It’s a cautionary tale of what happens when politicians prioritize political narratives over basic governance — when “helping immigrants” means sacrificing the rule of law, public safety, and the businesses that actually pay the bills.
The sidewalks are clogged. The stores are closing. The garbage is piling up. And the people who built and sustained these neighborhoods are being pushed out.
How much more can New York take before the lights go out on entire blocks? The vendors may feel “free” now, but the city itself is paying a devastating price.
