Media Coverage: Tribute to Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University
Utah Valley University held a vigil to honor Charlie Kirk, who was tragically assassinated on campus just nine days ago. The vigil took place ahead of his funeral on Sunday, with tens of thousands expected to attend, including former President Donald Trump.
Context of the Case
This event unfolds against the backdrop of a shocking murder that began with the fatal stabbing of a Ukrainian woman in North Carolina. The suspect is a Black man, which sparked a heated online debate between Charlie Kirk and commentator Van Jones. Kirk claimed that the murder was racially motivated due to the victim being white, while Jones vehemently denounced this assertion as unfounded. Their public sparring led to a barrage of tweets from Jones, who stated that Kirk’s comments had resulted in death threats against him.

Final Message
In the days leading up to his death, Kirk reached out to Jones via a direct message on X, expressing a desire to have a respectful discussion about crime and race. He wrote, “Hey, Van, I mean it. I’d love to have you on my show to have a respectful conversation about crime and race. I would be a gentleman, as I know you would be as well. We can disagree about the issues agreeably.” This message was sent on September 9th, and Jones did not see it until the day after Kirk was murdered.
Reflection by Van Jones
Jones, who has written about this experience for CNN, reflected on the significance of Kirk’s final message. “We were going at it online, and then after he died, he reached out to me,” Jones recounted. He emphasized that despite their disagreements, Kirk was advocating for civil discourse and open dialogue. “He was not for censorship, civil war, or violence; he was for dialogue and open debate,” Jones stated.
In light of Kirk’s assassination, Jones urged for a calm and measured response to the rising tensions in society. “We need to lower the temperature. Yes, we can disagree, but as Kirk said, we can disagree agreeably,” he added.
A Call for Civil Discourse
Jones pointed out that Americans now face a choice: to either embrace more violence and outrage or to pursue a path of civil discourse. He echoed sentiments from Utah Governor Spencer Cox, highlighting that both sides of the political spectrum must work towards reducing hostility and promoting understanding.
As the vigil unfolds, the message is clear: in memory of Charlie Kirk, there is a call to foster dialogue over division and to honor his legacy by striving for respectful conversations, even amidst deep disagreements.
