Patrick Mahomes: ‘That No. 1 Seed is Important, it’s Like Winning a Playoff Game’ | NFL Week 17

Chiefs Secure Top Seed, Mahomes Emphasizes Health and Playoff Preparation

Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Chiefs have clinched the top seed in the AFC playoffs after a dominant victory over the Denver Broncos. Following the game, quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed his excitement for the upcoming break and emphasized the importance of getting players healthy for the postseason push.

“Getting that number one seed’s important,” Mahomes said. “It’s like winning a playoff game.” He acknowledged the grueling 11-day grind leading up to the game, stating, “It showed the toughness of the team… and we got better as the games went on.”

Mahomes also highlighted the significance of the bye week, especially considering the team’s injury concerns. “This was the earliest buy I’ve ever had,” he said. “We have some guys banged up, and to get them back healthy now… it was super important.”

While acknowledging the possibility of playing in Week 18 against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes emphasized his focus on preparation. “I’ll prepare regardless,” he said. “I mean Denver… it’s probably going to be a playoff team regardless, so I’m going to prepare for them like I’m going to start.”

The game saw several key offensive performances, including a highlight-reel throw from Mahomes to tight end Sam Mann. “He was on the ground still, but I just knew if I got it high enough that he was just wide open,” Mahomes explained.

The return of wide receiver Kadarius Toney has also provided a significant boost to the Chiefs’ offense. “I think we just built up to the perfect spot,” Mahomes said. “We’ve gotten better and better… and then you throw Hollywood in there and it kind of sets everybody perfectly in their roles.”

Mahomes also expressed his pride in seeing teammate Travis Kelce break multiple franchise records. “I was happy that we got it done in the regular season,” he said. “He’s done so much for this organization.”

Looking ahead to the playoffs, Mahomes and the Chiefs are focused on maintaining their momentum and continuing their pursuit of a Super Bowl championship.
