PART 4: This Might Be the Closest a Sasquatch Has Ever Been to a Camera Without Knowing

THE TRAIL CAMERA — PART 4: THE LIGHTS ABOVE THE RIDGE

The lights began descending.

Alex watched them through the trees, unable to move.

There were too many.

One became three.

Three became ten.

Ten became dozens.

They appeared silently above the ridge, suspended in the night like stars that had somehow fallen too low.

The forest around Alex had gone completely still.

No insects.

No birds.

No wind.

Even the creatures had stopped moving.

Hundreds of them stood among the trees.

Some were enormous.

Some were smaller.

Some were barely visible.

But all of them were looking toward the sky.

Alex slowly turned around.

For the first time, he realized how deep inside the forest he had traveled.

He couldn’t see his house.

Couldn’t see the road.

Couldn’t even see the trail he had followed.

He was surrounded by trees.

And creatures.

The largest one stood perhaps fifty feet away.

Its massive chest rose and fell slowly.

Its eyes remained fixed on the descending lights.

Then it looked at Alex.

It pointed toward the ground.

Alex followed the gesture.

There was something beneath his feet.

A circle.

The pine needles had been pushed aside in a perfect ring.

Inside it were strange markings.

They looked almost identical to the symbols scratched into the trail camera.

Alex crouched.

The markings were deep.

Fresh.

They hadn’t been there earlier.

He touched one.

The ground vibrated.

Alex pulled his hand away.

The vibration stopped.

He looked toward the creatures.

Every one of them was watching him now.

Not the lights.

Him.

Then the largest creature approached.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Alex remained frozen.

The creature stopped several feet away.

It lowered its enormous head.

For a moment, Alex thought it was going to attack.

Instead, it extended one hand.

Its palm faced upward.

Something rested inside it.

A small object.

Metallic.

Black.

Alex stared.

The creature opened its fingers.

The object fell into the dirt.

Alex picked it up.

It was cold.

Too cold.

The moment his fingers touched it, a sound entered his head.

Not through his ears.

Inside his mind.

A voice.

A whisper.

Do not look at the light.

Alex dropped the object.

He looked upward anyway.

The largest creature immediately roared.

The sound shook the forest.

Every smaller creature lowered itself.

Alex covered his ears.

But the sound wasn’t what frightened him.

The lights had changed.

They were no longer descending.

They were searching.

Thin beams of white light moved across the forest.

One passed between the trees.

Another swept across the ridge.

A third moved toward Alex.

The creatures scattered.

Alex ran.

He didn’t know where he was going.

Branches struck his face.

Roots caught his boots.

The white light moved behind him.

He could hear the trees cracking.

Something enormous was moving.

Not walking.

Moving.

Fast.

Alex threw himself behind a fallen tree.

The light passed over him.

He held his breath.

Nothing happened.

Then the beam stopped.

It hovered above him.

Alex closed his eyes.

He expected something to happen.

Instead, the light moved away.

Slowly.

Toward the creatures.

Alex looked through a gap beneath the fallen tree.

One of the smaller creatures stood in the clearing.

It had not run.

It stood alone.

Waiting.

The beam stopped above it.

The creature looked upward.

Then it screamed.

Not in pain.

In warning.

Every creature in the forest answered.

The sound became overwhelming.

Hundreds of voices.

Different tones.

Different pitches.

But all saying something similar.

A warning.

A call.

A command.

Then the lights disappeared.

All of them.

At once.

Darkness returned.

Alex remained beneath the fallen tree.

He waited.

One minute.

Two.

Five.

Nothing.

Finally, he crawled out.

The creatures were gone.

Every single one.

Only broken branches remained.

And the strange circle beneath the trees.

Alex stood.

“Where did you go?”

His voice echoed.

Then something answered.

Not a creature.

A human voice.

“Alex.”

He spun around.

Nothing.

The voice came again.

“Alex.”

It sounded exactly like the sender.

Alex reached for his phone.

The screen turned on.

No signal.

But a new recording had appeared.

VOICE_01.MP4

He pressed play.

Static.

Then the sender’s voice.

“If you’re hearing this, don’t trust the lights.”

Alex froze.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know if you’ll ever hear this.”

A pause.

“I found something beneath the ridge.”

Alex leaned closer.

The sender sounded terrified.

“It isn’t a cave.”

A breath.

“It’s a room.”

Alex’s skin prickled.

The recording continued.

“I found a door.”

Static.

“There’s no handle.”

Another pause.

“But it opens.”

Alex stopped the recording.

His heart was racing.

He played it again.

The same words.

The same terrified voice.

Then he noticed something.

The recording’s timestamp was three days earlier.

The sender had known about the ridge before tonight.

Maybe that’s why the creatures had appeared.

Maybe that’s why the cameras had changed.

Maybe that’s why the lights were coming.

Alex started walking toward the ridge.

He didn’t know whether it was bravery or stupidity.

Probably both.

The forest seemed different now.

The trees were taller.

The darkness heavier.

He followed the strange markings on the ground.

Every few yards, another symbol appeared.

Scratched into bark.

Pressed into mud.

Drawn across stones.

The creatures had marked the route.

Or someone had.

After nearly an hour, Alex reached the base of the ridge.

There was a wall of rock ahead.

He searched for an opening.

Nothing.

Then he noticed the trees.

They had been bent away from one section of the hillside.

A narrow passage.

Alex stepped inside.

The temperature dropped immediately.

The air became cold.

He continued.

The passage opened into a small clearing.

At its center stood a stone.

The stone was unlike anything around it.

Perfectly smooth.

Almost black.

There were markings across its surface.

The same symbols.

Alex placed his hand against it.

The stone vibrated.

Then a section of the ground moved.

Alex jumped backward.

The earth opened.

A narrow staircase appeared.

It descended into darkness.

Alex stared.

“You’re kidding.”

There was no other explanation.

He pulled out his flashlight.

The beam disappeared down the stairs.

He began descending.

One step.

Then another.

The air smelled ancient.

Wet stone.

Dirt.

Something metallic.

The staircase continued farther than it should have.

Twenty steps.

Thirty.

Forty.

Then fifty.

Alex reached the bottom.

A tunnel stretched ahead.

Smooth walls.

No roots.

No signs of construction.

The walls appeared carved from solid rock.

But there were no tool marks.

No machinery.

Nothing.

Alex walked deeper.

After several minutes, he saw something.

A door.

The same door the sender had described.

It stood at the end of the tunnel.

No handle.

No hinges.

No visible mechanism.

Just a smooth black surface.

Alex approached.

His footsteps echoed.

He touched the door.

It opened.

Not outward.

Not inward.

It simply disappeared.

Behind it was a room.

Alex entered.

He stopped.

The room was enormous.

Far larger than the ridge above should have allowed.

The ceiling disappeared into darkness.

Along the walls were hundreds of objects.

Metal.

Stone.

Wood.

Some looked ancient.

Others looked modern.

Cameras.

Trail cameras.

Old film cameras.

Digital cameras.

Hundreds of them.

Alex walked closer.

Each camera was pointed toward something.

Some toward the walls.

Some toward tunnels.

Some toward the ceiling.

One was pointed directly at him.

Alex stepped backward.

The camera activated.

A red light appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Every camera in the room began turning on.

Alex stood in the middle of the chamber.

Hundreds of red lights stared back at him.

Then every screen displayed the same image.

A forest.

Not the forest above.

A different forest.

Older.

Untouched.

No roads.

No buildings.

No people.

Creatures moved through it.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Different sizes.

Families.

Groups.

They walked upright.

They hunted.

They carried things.

They interacted.

They built structures.

Alex watched in disbelief.

This wasn’t a single creature.

It wasn’t even a hidden species.

It was a population.

A civilization.

The footage changed.

The forest burned.

Then another image.

Trees falling.

Mountains being carved.

Roads appearing.

Cities growing.

The creatures retreating.

Hiding.

Disappearing deeper into the wilderness.

Alex understood.

They hadn’t suddenly appeared.

They had been here the entire time.

Humans had simply pushed them farther away.

The screen changed again.

A modern trail camera appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Millions of images flashed across the room.

Everywhere.

North America.

Canada.

Alaska.

Washington.

Montana.

The Appalachians.

The forests of the Pacific Northwest.

Alex watched thousands of sightings appear.

Not blurry footage.

Not hoaxes.

Actual recordings.

Some showed faces.

Some showed entire groups.

Some showed creatures watching humans.

And then the footage changed.

A map appeared.

Red dots spread across the continent.

Hundreds.

Then thousands.

Then tens of thousands.

Alex stepped backward.

The red dots were moving.

Slowly.

All toward the same places.

The same ridges.

The same mountain ranges.

The same remote forests.

Something was happening.

Then a new image appeared.

The white lights.

Alex recognized them immediately.

The lights moved across the map.

Searching.

Scanning.

Following the creatures.

The red dots began disappearing.

One after another.

Alex stared.

The creatures weren’t gathering.

They were fleeing.

The lights were hunting them.

Then a final message appeared on the screen.

Not in English.

But Alex understood it anyway.

THE FIRST SEARCH HAS BEGUN.

He stepped away from the screen.

“First?”

The lights in the chamber went out.

Total darkness.

Then something breathed behind him.

Alex turned slowly.

Two eyes appeared in the darkness.

Not the eyes of a creature.

Something else.

Something taller.

Much taller.

Alex raised his flashlight.

The beam hit a face.

He dropped the flashlight.

The thing standing before him was not covered in fur.

It was pale.

Almost human.

Its face was long.

Its eyes were completely black.

And it was smiling.

Alex backed away.

The creature tilted its head.

Then it spoke.

Perfectly.

Clearly.

In Alex’s own voice.

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

Alex couldn’t move.

The creature stepped closer.

Behind it, the chamber lights flickered back on.

The hundreds of cameras all turned toward Alex.

Then every screen changed.

They showed his house.

His street.

His town.

His city.

Then the entire country.

Red dots appeared.

Thousands.

Millions.

The creatures weren’t just in the forest anymore.

They were moving.

Toward populated areas.

Alex looked back at the pale creature.

“Why?”

The creature’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, fear appeared on its face.

It pointed upward.

Toward the ceiling.

Alex looked.

A faint vibration passed through the chamber.

Then a distant sound.

A low mechanical hum.

The white lights had returned.

But this time they weren’t outside.

They were above the mountain.

And the ceiling began glowing.

The pale creature whispered:

“They found us.”

The entire chamber shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The cameras began screaming with static.

Then one screen displayed something different.

A live image.

Alex’s house.

The camera was pointed toward his bedroom window.

A figure stood outside.

Then another.

Then another.

But the image wasn’t showing the creatures.

It was showing people.

Dozens of them.

Standing in his yard.

Wearing dark clothing.

Carrying equipment.

And one man stepped toward the camera.

He looked directly into the lens.

Then he raised a hand.

Alex recognized him.

The sender.

The person who had originally sent him the footage.

Except the sender wasn’t supposed to be there.

He had disappeared hours ago.

The man on the screen smiled.

Then he spoke.

“Alex, if you’re seeing this, you’ve made the same mistake I did.”

Alex stepped closer.

“What mistake?”

The man’s expression changed.

He looked terrified.

“I thought they were hiding from us.”

He glanced over his shoulder.

“They aren’t.”

The screen flickered.

The man whispered one final sentence.

“They’re hiding us from something else.”

The transmission ended.

The chamber went dark.

Then, somewhere far above Alex, something enormous struck the mountain.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The pale creature looked toward the ceiling.

Its face had gone completely white.

Alex whispered:

“What is that?”

The creature answered.

“The reason your world has never found us.”

Another impact shook the chamber.

Stone cracked overhead.

The pale creature grabbed Alex’s arm.

For the first time, Alex felt how strong it was.

“Run.”

They ran.

Behind them, the chamber began collapsing.

And above the mountain, the white lights descended through the trees.

Not searching anymore.

Coming directly toward them.

The last thing Alex saw before the tunnel disappeared behind falling stone was a massive silhouette standing beneath the lights.

It wasn’t a Sasquatch.

It wasn’t human.

And unlike the creatures Alex had seen before—

It wasn’t afraid.

It was waiting.
