The one big thing LeBron James learned from his longtime trainer

One may think that with all LeBron James has accomplished throughout his career in the NBA, there isn’t much he can learn from others about anything having to do with his craft. Some may think he even entered the NBA without needing to learn much and that it was simply a matter of manifesting his achievements over the years.

But Mike Mancias, his longtime trainer, says he did teach the future Hall of Famer about one important thing that tends to lead to greatness, not just in sports but in just about every other area of life.

Mancias said during an appearance on the “High Performance” podcast that he got James to realize the value of being consistent.

“The greatest lesson that I have taught him I believe is just consistency, being consistent. I actually think we’ve taught each other because we challenge each other each and every day. I’m not going to back down, he’s not going to back down. What has happened here is we’ve both become uber-consistent.”

He also added that this lesson has helped James become a solid leader, at least in terms of the first and most important area of leadership — leading by example and from the front.

“When you are in a team setting, others know you’re going to be there for them as well. If you’re consistent with your behavior if you are consistent with your attitude, with your performance then your teammates don’t have to question what you’re going to bring the table that particular day.”

James may not be the greatest player in NBA history, but he has been arguably the most consistent one in terms of sustained elite or near-elite production year after year. He averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds a game last season while shooting 54% from the field. Perhaps most impressively, he made a career-high 41% of his 3-point attempts.

With the consistency he learned from Mancias and the maniacal way he takes care of his body, another year or two of that level of production seems within reach.
