It was last year that Stephen Curry deemed himself the “Best Point Guard Ever” over Magic Johnson. As expected, the hoops community was divided on the claim, as some agreed with the Warriors superstar while others picked the Lakers legend as the GOAT. Even Bay Area’s own Matt Steinmetz surprisingly disagreed with the Chef, “When you say point guard, I think Magic gets the nod.” Despite the snub from the media vet, Steph did not take Steiny’s opinion to heart and left him absolutely stunned on his special day.

Yes, as Matt celebrated his 60 birthday on Thursday, he got surprise wishes from several Bay Area legends, including Chris Mullin and Bob Myers. But he had no idea that an even bigger surprise awaited him later in the day. During his radio show, Steiny received an anonymous call live on air, and he asked, “Hello. Who’s there?” And the person replied, “It’s the guy that is not a true point guard. How you doing Matt Steinmetz? Happy Birthday.” Sure enough, it was none other than Stephen Curry!

Refusing to believe that it was actually him, Matt questioned, “You gotta be kidding me. Somebody’s an impersonator here. Is this really Steph?” But the Warriors superstar confirmed his identity and claimed only an occasion like Steiny’s birthday could have brought him on radio ahead of training camp.

Well, Steph did take a little dig at Matt for picking Magic over him during his introduction, as it was the media veteran who said last year, “To me, if you call Steph a point guard, that is limited. He is more than a point guard. I think he’s a half a point guard and half a shooting guard.”

With his versatile skillset of playmaking, while also being the greatest shooter in the world, Steph’s true position has often been questioned by fans and analysts. Therefore, many, including Steiny, chose Magic Johnson as the greatest point guard because he was always true to that specific role. However, the media veteran did give Curry his flowers when he surprised him on his birthday.

Matt Steinmetz claims Stephen Curry is the “best thing” to happen in his career!

With Curry going out of his way to make Steiny’s birthday even more special, the former game-day Comcast SportsNet Bay Area analyst reciprocated the gesture by giving him the flowers that he deserves, “You walked into a brutal situation and you completely turned the franchise around man. You got so much to be proud of.” When Steph got drafted fifteen years ago, the Warriors franchise had turned into a laughingstock in the league and had made the playoffs only once in fifteen years. But the Baby-Faced Assassin became the pillar of this sinking ship and turned it into arguably the greatest modern-day NBA dynasty.

Moreover, the “unfathomable” success even boosted the careers of Bay Area legends, including Matt, who admitted on the Steiny & Guru Show“We have these things called drops in radio and I don’t know if you’ve ever heard it but I’ll say it live for you, Steph Curry’s the best thing that ever happened to my career! Then, Curry even revealed that he had a special gift for Steiny as a token of appreciation and it would reach him by the end of the show.

Sure enough, the Bay Area legend was left overwhelmed with the surprise and took a moment to process what had happened, “Damn! Wanna go to break right now.” It’s great to see Steph looking out for Steiny regardless of his choice in the point guard debate. Do you agree?
