A late Chiefs TD closes out the scoring

With less than two minutes to go, the Chiefs aired it out. Xavier Worthy scored his second touchdown of the game, this one for 50 yards.
It made the final score slightly more respectable: 40-22 Eagles, as the clock wound down to zero.

Geoff’s second prop bet: 2nd-half score

Geoff hits another bet! The Chiefs last touchdown makes the second half the highest-scoring half of the game.

Hi there, Kenny Pickett

How many people predicted Kenny Pickett would finish out the Super Bowl because the Eagles were up 40-14?
If you did, hope you played lottery, too.

10:06p ET

DeAndre Hopkins with his first Super Bowl TD

DeAndre Hopkins, who joined the Chiefs in October after a trade from the Titans, finally made it to the Super Bowl for the first time in his career.

He won’t get a ring, but he did get to score a touchdown, which is still a nice story.

Tom Brady knows how the Chiefs must be feeling

It’s been a tough day for the Chiefs, who went from hoping for a three-peat to getting blown out on the NFL’s biggest stage.

Tom Brady, who went 7-3 in Super Bowls, understands what the KC players are feeling.

“It hurts to lose this game,” Brady said on the broadcast. “You don’t ever get over [the losses].”

It’s all about the trenches

Ralph Vacchiano: Most good teams know this, but this game is a great reminder to the rest of the NFL: If you want to build a championship team, do it through the trenches.

The Eagles have put a lot of financial and draft capital into the offensive and defensive lines over the years, and it’s paying off for them tonight, big time. It did two years ago too, when they barely lost the Super Bowl to the Chiefs. But their front lines are clearly the reason they’re winning this one now.

Yes, they have a dynamic running back in Saquon Barkley, a terrific quarterback in Jalen Hurts and plenty of talented players. But none of that matters if the lines don’t work. Barkley learned that in his six years in New York with terrible offensive lines on the Giants.

Now the world can see it all working to absolute perfection.

9:47p ET

Phew, another sack and Mahomes turnover

The Eagles sacked Patrick Mahomes for the sixth time — one off from the Super Bowl record of seven — and this time, they forced the fumble too.
Ben Arthur: That smack in the face that Patrick Mahomes took on that last Chiefs’ possession — courtesy of the Eagles’ Milton Williams, who forced a fumble on the play that was recovered by the Eagles — was this game in a nutshell.

Philly has been the more physical team on both sides of the ball. It’s why Kansas City’s hopes for a historic three-peat won’t come to fruition.

9:43p ET

Jalen Hurts, MVP?

The Eagles took another 5:43 off the clock with a 10-play drive that ended in a field goal. Jake Elliott hit his third field goal, this one from 48 yards. He now has eight Super Bowl field goals in his career — the only player with more is Harrison Butker, with nine.

Ralph Vacchiano: Jalen Hurts is making a late push for MVP.

The Eagles quarterback took a backseat to the defense in the first half of this game, but very quietly he’s putting up big game numbers. Thanks in large part to his 46-yard touchdown strike to DeVonta Smith, he now is 17-of-22 for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Maybe more importantly he’s also rushed 11 times for 72 yards and a score and has the Eagles leading 37-6.

It’s not quite the big game he had two years ago — at least not yet — when he threw for 304 yards and a touchdown and ran for 70 yards and three touchdowns. But the numbers are starting to get close.

9:28p ET

Chiefs aren’t quitting, at least

The Chiefs are still fighting and finally got on the board when Patrick Mahomes found Xavier Worthy for a 24-yard touchdown.
9:26p ET

Eagles’ aggression pays off

Ralph Vacchiano: That is some serious killer instinct.

Just when you’d expect the Eagles to do what they do best — run the ball and grind the clock— Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore decide to put the game away instead.

Jalen Hurts connects with DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard TD, extending Eagles’ lead vs. Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX | NFL Highlights

OopsGeoblocked: Invalid or unknown DMAAnd Jalen Hurts delivers, throwing a perfect 48-yard pass down the middle of the field to a wide open DeVonta Smith for a touchdown and a 34-0 lead.

Sirianni knows what his team’s strength is. On the Eagles’ previous drive, which resulted in a field goal, they bullied their way downfield and took 6:42 off the clock. But he is an aggressive coach by nature, and he clearly wanted to put this game away.

Ben Arthur: This is over for the Chiefs, and we’re not even in the fourth quarter yet. That Devonta Smith touchdown was the dagger.

Jalen Hurts was so well protected on that touchdown throw, and that brings me to this point: Philadelphia has whooped Kansas City in the trenches. The Chiefs’ pass rush has been nonexistent, and their offensive line is getting Patrick Mahomes killed offensively. This is a reminder to the rest of the NFL of the importance of doing everything possible to become strong upfront.

9:21p ET

The dagger!

There’s still an entire quarter to go, but Jalen Hurts’ deep shot to DeVonta Smith might have just put this game away:
9:20p ET

Chiefs are running out of time

After the Eagles bled almost seven minutes off the clock, the Chiefs got the ball back late in the third quarter. On fourth-and-5 from their own 46-yard line, they pretty much had to go for it.
And once again, Philly’s defense stepped up, with Avonte Maddox batting away the ball meant for DeAndre Hopkins.

9:13p ET

Eagles OL is doing a heck of a job

Ben Arthur: The Chiefs are getting absolutely worn down by the Eagles offensive line, which is giving Jalen Hurts plenty of time in the pocket. It has also created some big rushing lanes for Hurts on scrambles, which played a key role in setting up that last Philly field goal. Steve Spagnuolo’s unit is going to need a turnover to swing the momentum, because it doesn’t appear that Kansas City will be able to “turn it on” suddenly upfront.

Chris Jones being out of the game, even if just temporarily, doesn’t help the cause. Not even the occasional blitzes, which led to the Hurts interception in the first half, seem to be working for Kansas City.

9:11p ET

Chris Jones leaves on a cart

From bad to worse for the Chiefs. Star defensive lineman Chris Jones was carted off with a knee injury and was later declared doubtful to return.

Right after that, the Eagles tacked on a field goal for a 27-0 lead.

The good news for KC is Jones was able to walk on his own to the bench.

9:05p ET

Saquon Barkley with the circus catch!

Is it really the Super Bowl unless someone makes a juggling catch?

Well, Saquon Barkley came through:
Earlier in the game, Barkley also set the NFL’s all-time single-season rushing record (postseason included).

8:56p ET

The Bear’s second prop bet: Mahomes’ first run

Chris “The Bear Fallica” hits another bet! Patrick Mahomes’ first rush attempt goes for Over 6.5 yards.

8:50p ET

Can the Chiefs get a spark?

Ben Arthur: As the second half gets underway, there will be a microscope on Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense. But really, Kansas City just needs something — a game-changing play in any phase to spark some momentum.

This is going to be a full-team effort for Kansas City. There’s plenty of time left, and it’s not like the Chiefs haven’t been in adverse situations before. They’ve made their living this season winning ugly games.

8:49p ET

Who’s the MVP so far?

Ralph Vacchiano: There’s a long way to go, but if the Super Bowl keeps trending this way, the MVP is going to have to be an Eagles defensive player. And despite the pick-six by CB Cooper DeJean and the diving interception by LB Zack Baun, so far the MVP might be defensive end Josh Sweat.

He has been a monster up front, constantly collapsing the pocket from the edge and keeping the pressure on Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. According to NextGen Stats, the Eagles pressured Mahomes on 47 percent of their plays and didn’t blitz once. Sweat is a big reason for that.

He also has 1.5 sacks and a team-high four tackles. He was invisible on defense at times during the regular season, but he’s picked the perfect moment to come alive.

8:23p ET

Super Bowl LIX halftime odds update

Prior to kickoff, at DraftKings Sportsbook, the Chiefs were a 1.5-point favorite, and on the moneyline, they were at -120. But my, how the tables have turned.

With the Eagles sporting a 24-0 halftime lead over the defending champs, Philly is a 15.5-point favorite and -2100 on the moneyline. Lastly, the Over/Under total for the game was 48.5 prior to kickoff. As of halftime, it’s at 46.5.

8:21p ET

Halftime thoughts: It’s been all Eagles

Ralph Vacchiano: It’s hard to imagine the Philadelphia Eagles writing a better start to the Super Bowl than this. They have gotten nothing from Saquon Barkley (12 carries, 31 yards) and it doesn’t matter at all thanks to a defense that is just dominating this game. They’ve sacked Patrick Mahomes three times, picked him off twice and returned one for a touchdown. And they now lead 24-0 at the half.

They held the Chiefs to just 23 yards of offense. Mahomes is just 6-of-14 for 33 yards. And tight end Travis Kelce doesn’t have a single catch.

There’s a long way to go, but the second half is when the Eagles usually ride their powerful running game and just grind their opponents — and the clock — down.

Ben Arthur: The Chiefs’ worst nightmares have come to fruition against this Eagles defense.

Nothing is open for Patrick Mahomes downfield, which has forced him to hold the ball, which has put his offensive linemen — who’ve struggled in extended-play situations — in a bind. Mahomes has been sacked three times. He also has two interceptions (both of which came in the second quarter), including a 38-yard pick-six. Neither Travis Kelce nor DeAndre Hopkins, who dropped a would-be third-down conversion on the last possession of the half, has a catch. The Chiefs, who have been shut out to this point, have just 23 yards of offense and not a single third down conversion (0-for-6).

The Chiefs’ running backs only have five touches through two quarters, including three runs, but Kansas City can’t really switch the strategy now to establish balance offensively down four scores. Its best hope is a quick passing game approach to build some confidence. This is time for Andy Reid to show his greatness as a playcaller.

8:19p ET

Nothing is working right for the Chiefs

Just when things seemed like they can’t get worse for the Chiefs, DeAndre Hopkins dropped a pass that he would catch nine out of 10 times, and KC had to punt again.
“Nothing seems to be going their way right now,” Tom Brady said on the broadcast.

The Eagles then went into halftime with a huge, and surprising, 24-0 lead.

8:13p ET

Let’s hear it for the Eagles defense

Ralph Vacchiano: This has been a flawless first half for the Philadelphia Eagles defense. Linebacker Zack Baun made the latest big play, with a diving interception at the Chiefs 14-yard line late in the first half. Baun, who Eagles GM Howie Roseman thought might be just a special teamer and depth player when they signed him, has been one of Philly’s best defensive players this season.

Two plays later, Jalen Hurts hit A.J. Brown for a 12-yard touchdown pass and a 24-0 Eagles lead. I know it’s the Chiefs and no one should count them out, but the way the Eagles defense is playing does anyone really think they’ve got 25 points in them the rest of the way?

8:08p ET

A diving interception by Zack Baun!

As soon as the Chiefs defense forced another punt, Patrick Mahomes threw another interception. Zack Baun made a beautiful diving grab on the play:
This one wasn’t a pick-six, but it did set the Eagles up to score another touchdown, this time courtesy of A.J. Brown.
