For years, Travis Kelce has been the straw that stirs the Kansas City Chiefs’ drink on offense. After seven straight years of 1,000+ receiving yards, Kelce dipped below that last season.
Cue for panic? Not really, considering Kelce was rested for the final regular season game, and he then raised his game for the playoffs. But there might be a little concerned look on Chiefs fans’ faces after the first two weeks of the new season.
Why? Because Kelce has totaled just four catches for 39 yards.
Despite Kelce struggling in the opening fortnight, Patrick Mahomes isn’t worried about the All-Pro tight end.
“Obviously we’ve played two opponents [Ravens, Bengals] we’ve played a lot, so they have a plan on how they’re going to account for Travis,” Mahomes said. “But as the season goes on, I mean, he’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards, but the leader he is, what’s special is he’s hyping everybody up, he’s keeping everybody motivated, and that’s what you need out of your great players.”
Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. The Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. Sunday’s matchup at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium had all the makings of a must-watch game, and the national viewing audience showed it.
CBS Sports reported that nearly 28 million people watched the Chiefs’ walk-off win against the Bengals 26-25 on the foot of Harrison Butker on Sunday evening.
It was the most watched telecast on a single network since Super Bowl LVIII, also won by the Kansas City Chiefs. CBS Sports reported that it was the most-watched “NFL on CBS” September game since 1998.
When the Kansas City Chiefs waived tight end Peyton Hendershot on Monday, many wondered why the club would part ways with him less than a month after acquiring him via trade. Now that Tuesday afternoon’s transactions are rolling in, the decision makes a lot more sense.
Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Kansas City is re-signing Hendershot to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.
After winning for the second straight week on the final play of the game, they set their sights on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3 wondering if there’s anything they can do to make their roster any stronger.
While some might look at the Chiefs and ask if there’s anything that needs to be fixed, Bleacher Report has revealed what it thinks are Kansas City’s top five weaknesses.
1. Interior Defensive Line
2. Cornerback
3. Safety
4. Left Tackle
5. Wide Receiver
The little boy, who was celebrating his 7th birthday, was already delighted to pull a Travis Kelce jersey out of a red gift bag, but his jaw dropped with shock when he heard his dad say, “We’re going to the Chiefs game today.”
“Oh my god!” he yelped, burying his face in his hands, and then running to hug his dad. “Love you,” he whispered to his parents with tears in his eyes. When his mom zoomed in on her son, revealing an adorable gap-toothed smile, she asked why he was crying. “I’m just so happy!” he replied.
Anchors Kotb and Jenna Bush-Hager were delighted by the adorable display, noticing that he was “overcome with emotion.” You can watch the video at this link.
The fight for bragging rights has been building since the Chiefs’ 23-20 victory in the AFC championship game in 2023 (in which Butker also kicked a game-winning field goal). Naturally, there was some trash talking in the lead up to Sunday’s game.
The Bengals social media team posted on X, “Made it to Kansas. … Where’s the stadium?”
Picking up on the slight, and waiting for the right time, the mayor of Kansas City, Quinton Lucas, fired back with his own quip.
I hope y’all had a great day in Missouri. You’re welcome back any time. https://t.co/8qtQasaUSw

Around the NFL
Head coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday the plan at this stage is to once again get Fields ready to start Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers as Russell Wilson continues to deal with a calf injury.
“Really, we’re kind of in the same posture as we were in last week with Russ,” Tomlin told reporters. “As I sit here today, Russ is not scheduled to be a full participant in practice, and so we’re readying a plan that features Justin and his readiness.”
It’s the same story as last week — almost verbatim — as Tomlin reiterated he’s not living in “hypotheticals” when it comes to Wilson questions.
The Miami Dolphins placed Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve Tuesday after the quarterback suffered another concussion in Thursday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Per NFL rules, Tagovailoa must remain on injured reserve for at least four games. There is no timetable for how long Miami plans to keep him on IR as he focuses on his health before his return to the field.
It is the third diagnosed concussion of Tagovailoa’s NFL career.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel on Monday said Tagovailoa wouldn’t be placed on IR until more information became available, but the decision was made Tuesday after further evaluation.
The Patriots released wide receiver Jalen Reagor from the practice squad on Tuesday, hours after Reagor published a cryptic social media post suggesting that he might not have been happy with his role in New England.
A former first-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, Reagor signed a one-year, $1.3 million extension with the Patriots in March after spending the 2023 season with New England as a backup WR and kick returner. He received $442,500 in guaranteed money.
Reagor did not make the 53-man roster following the preseason and re-signed with New England’s practice squad in August. He wasn’t active for the first two games of New England’s season.
On Tuesday, Reagor posted a meme on Instagram of a Bugatti parked in a driveway of a trailer park.

1. Steele’s run style matches the Chiefs’ scheme
For years, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid primarily ran zone-scheme runs as the base of his offense. It fit past runners in Kansas City, but Pacheco has forced Reid to tweak his run game to feature more downhill, gap runs.
During Pacheco’s rookie year, only 35% of his rushes were gap-run schemes, according to PFF. Last season, that mark increased to 43%, boosted by the Chiefs’ postseason run; 54% of Pacheco’s playoff carries were gap runs.
So far this season, it’s an even split for Pacheco: 17 gap runs and 17 zone runs. The 50% rate represents the gradual change in the Chiefs’ run-game mentality, and Steele fits right in. Seven of Steele’s nine rushes this season have been gap-run scheme. Similar to Pacheco, Steele appears at his best when given a runway to gather momentum and accelerate into a run lane with power.
