Former UFC Fighter Suman Mokhtarian Shot Dead in Brazen Daylight Attack in Sydney

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – The Australian mixed martial arts (MMA) community is mourning the loss of former UFC fighter and respected coach, Suman Mokhtarian, who was tragically shot dead in a suspected targeted attack in Sydney’s northwest on Wednesday evening. The brazen nature of the attack, carried out in a quiet residential neighborhood, has sent shockwaves through the local community and the global combat sports world.

Details of the Fatal Attack

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time in the suburb of Riverstone, a usually tranquil residential area. Mokhtarian, 33, was reportedly out for a walk near the intersection of Annaluke Street and Riverbrae Avenue when he was ambushed and sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Emergency services, including NSW Ambulance paramedics, responded quickly to the scene. However, despite rapid efforts, the former featherweight fighter was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Riverstone Police Area Commander, Superintendent Jason Joyce, described the killing as a “brazen” act of violence. “You’d want to think that in a residential area like that, people could wander the streets at that time of night and be safe,” Joyce stated, emphasizing that police believe the shooting was deliberate and targeted.

Connection to Organized Crime and Prior Threats

Authorities are currently treating the incident as a targeted attack, potentially linked to organized crime activity. This theory is supported by events that unfolded immediately following the shooting:

Escape Vehicle: Witnesses reported seeing a red Audi speeding away from the area immediately after the gunshots were heard.
Torched Vehicles: Shortly after the attack, police and fire services located two burned-out vehicles—one being a red Audi and the other a white van—in different locations nearby. The use of torched vehicles is a chilling hallmark often associated with organized crime hits in Sydney, suggesting a coordinated operation.

Crucially, this was not the first time Mokhtarian had faced a threat to his life. Local media reports and police sources confirmed that he had survived an alleged assassination attempt in February 2024 outside the Australian Top Team gym in Wentworthville, where he served as owner and head coach. In that earlier incident, a gunman, allegedly disguised as a food delivery driver, opened fire, but the weapon jammed, allowing Mokhtarian to escape. The suspect was later arrested but released on bail.

Authorities are actively investigating whether the deadly shooting on Wednesday is connected to those previous threats, suggesting a continuing attempt on his life.

A Respected Coach and UFC Veteran

Suman Mokhtarian was a well-known and highly respected figure in the Australian MMA scene.

UFC Career: He competed twice in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in the featherweight division, losing bouts in 2018 and 2019 before transitioning his focus primarily to coaching. His professional MMA record stood at 8 wins and 2 losses.
Coaching Legacy: After retiring from active competition, Mokhtarian became a dedicated coach, playing a key role in developing some of Australia’s top MMA prospects at the Australian Top Team gym. His passion and mentorship earned him widespread admiration.

Tributes have poured in from the MMA community. Jesse Swain, one of Mokhtarian’s students, posted a heartfelt message, saying: **”Suman believed in me more than I believed in myself. I owe all I’ve done in MMA to him. Anyone that knew him personally knows how passionate and invigorating he
