Cops Discover Bodies in Woman’s Trunk During Traffic Stop
In a shocking case that has gripped Baltimore County, Maryland, police officers uncovered the bodies of two young children during a routine traffic stop, leading to a disturbing investigation into abuse and neglect.
The Traffic Stop That Changed Everything
On July 28, 2021, officers pulled over Nicole Johnson, 35, for driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle with a fake temporary tag. During the stop, officers noticed a strong odor of decomposition coming from the car.
As Johnson began removing items from her trunk, police were horrified to discover two severely decomposed bodies concealed in containers—later identified as her niece, Joshlyn Johnson (7), and nephew, Larry O’Neal III (5).
A History of Neglect
Investigators revealed that the children had been placed in Johnson’s care by their mother in 2019. According to court records, Johnson admitted to fatally injuring Joshlyn in May 2020 and later leaving her body in the trunk for over a year. Larry died under similar circumstances in May 2021. Autopsy results confirmed both children suffered from extreme malnutrition, with weights far below healthy standards for their age.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
After a lengthy investigation, Johnson pleaded guilty in August 2024 to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death. On February 10, 2025, Judge Nancy Purpura sentenced her to life in prison, suspending all but 50 years. Johnson will serve five decades behind bars without the possibility of parole.
Community Outrage and Reflection
The case has sparked outrage and heartbreak across the community, raising questions about how such severe neglect went unnoticed for so long. Child welfare advocates are calling for systemic changes to prevent future tragedies.
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of child welfare vigilance,” said a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Police Department.

Location: Baltimore County, Maryland
Victims: Joshlyn Johnson (7) and Larry O’Neal III (5)

This harrowing case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked abuse and the critical need for better protective measures for vulnerable children.
