Devastating update for Canada after loss to Latvia at WJC.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Canada at the World Junior Championship tournament.

Canada was left stunned on Friday after they were on the wrong side of a massive upset at the World Junior Championship tournament, with Latvia shocking the Canadians by picking up a huge win for their country in the shootout. Unfortunately for Canada though that was only the beginning of their troubles with a truly devastating update being released by Hockey Canada just moments ago.

According to an official announcement, 17 year old defenseman Matthew Schaefer has been ruled out of the remaining games at the tournament following a rather violent collision with the goal post. Schaefer was clearly shaken up on the play but the fact that he will miss the remainder of the tournament will be a huge blow to the Canadian squad.

Schaeffer had a great scoring chance during the game against Latvia but unfortunately it would turn into disaster for the young defenseman when he appeared to go full speed into the goal post. The result was a violent impact with cold, hard, steel and unfortunately we now know that Schaeffer was seriously injured as a result of that impact. Here is a look at the replay for those of you who did not witness it live.

Hockey Canada was heavily criticized for their roster construction coming into the tournament and no doubt that criticism will only become more intense following the upset loss, especially if their young players do not manage to turn things around at this tournament.
