Free agent Sam Gagner on the verge of signing new contract!
Huge development in the veteran forward’s career. Full details below:
Sam Gagner is 35 years old and remains an unrestricted free agent, unsigned by an NHL team this season. While he may have played for the last time in the big league, Gagner is not giving up on playing professionally as multiple Swedish media outlets, including HockeyNews.se, report that the veteran forward is currently in Stockholm, Sweden and has been seen practising with HockeyAllsevenskan club Djurgården.
After he was seen skating with HockeyAllsevenskan club Djurgården, Gagner was asked if he had plans to sign with the club, only to reply “We’ll see,” according to TV4.
“I haven’t made a decision, so I’m open to everything. We’ll see what happens. We’re taking it one day at a time now.”
More details were provided by the TV station, who claimed that Gagner was in Stockholm to friend and former teammate Alexander Edler.
It is also possible that Gagner has come to Europe as he is expected to join Team Canada at the upcoming Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. As of now though, Hockey Canada has not yet announced its roster for the tournament.
It’d be great for Gagner to keep playing after spending 17 years in the NHL. After 1,043 NHL games and three separate stints with the Edmonton Oilers, Gagner also played for the Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets. He has a total of 197 goals and 529 points in the NHL.
He could bring leadership and experience to Djurgården, who currently sits fourth in the 14-team league’s standings with 61 points in 28 games.
