WWE’s first-ever Women’s United States Champion, Chelsea Green, has quit social media following the backlash she received over her reaction to Hulk Hogan’s death.
Green paid tribute to the fallen wrestling legend live on CBS News 24/7 after he passed away at the age of 71 on Thursday. While she acknowledged his “polarizing political views,” she also praised him, referring to him as an “absolute icon.”
This didn’t go down well with some fans, as the female superstar is known to support LGBTQ+ groups, and they slammed her for hailing Hulk, who was one of Donald Trump’s most vocal supporters and was also caught up in a racism scandal.
The Canadian responded to the criticism with a strong statement.
“A significant part of my role at @WWE involves engaging w the public & responding to questions, often on live platforms,” she tweeted. “Yesterday, I was asked to comment on Hulk Hogan on live tv. Let me be clear: my stance on racism is unwavering. I do not condone it—period.”
“If my response (or tweet) seemed dismissive of real concerns, I sincerely apologize,” she continued. “That was never my intention. I tried to acknowledge a death respectfully, even when the legacy is complicated. I am learning one day at a time and will continue to learn.”

Chelsea’s post seemed reasonable enough, but it hardly got fans to calm down, and they continued to harass her to the point of her getting off social media altogether.
“I’ve tried to keep my page positive and comedic, but today, a lot changed… and it hit harder than I expected. The name calling, the death threats, the faceless accounts,” she wrote on Friday night.
“Social media was supposed to be a fun place and it hasn’t been for a while. It’s been overwhelming and I need to step away for a little bit.”
Chelsea Green’s account hasn’t been deactivated, but it appears she might be avoiding the platform for the foreseeable future.
