What began as a routine traffic stop turned into a shocking scene straight out of a crime thriller — one that even hardened officers say they’ll never forget.
It was just after 3:00 p.m. when Missouri State Trooper David Collins pulled over a silver SUV on I-70 near Oak Grove. The driver, a woman estimated to be in her late 40s, had been flagged for expired plates. She appeared calm at first — almost too calm.
But as Collins approached the vehicle, he noticed something strange.
“It hit me like a punch to the face,” he said. “There was this smell — something you don’t forget once you’ve smelled it before.”
The odor coming from the vehicle was so strong that it penetrated even through the hot summer air. When questioned, the woman casually claimed it was just dirty laundry she’d been meaning to drop off.
But Trooper Collins wasn’t buying it.
“I told her, ‘Ma’am, I’ve smelled laundry. That ain’t laundry,’” he recalled.
“Open the Trunk. Now.”
When the woman hesitated to comply, a second officer arrived as backup. The officers ordered her to step out of the vehicle while they inspected the rear of the SUV.
What they found left everyone stunned.
Inside the trunk was a large black plastic bag, tightly wrapped with duct tape and stuffed beneath an old blanket. It was bloated, leaking, and emitting a smell so intense that even the responding officers were seen covering their faces with their sleeves.
“At that point, I knew this was no longer just a traffic stop,” Collins said.
Bodycam footage from the encounter, later released by the department, shows one officer carefully slicing the plastic bag open — only to recoil in horror.
“Oh my God—call it in. Call it in NOW!” an officer is heard yelling.
A Secret Hidden for Months
Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed what was inside the bag, citing an active investigation and the need to notify next of kin. However, multiple sources close to the case say the contents point to a long-hidden crime, possibly dating back several months.
Neighbors from the woman’s apartment complex, interviewed shortly after the news broke, described her as quiet, distant, and “a little strange.” One resident said she hadn’t seen the woman take any trash out in weeks — but had noticed a foul smell near the garage.
“She said it was her cat’s litter box,” the neighbor added. “But no cat smells like that.”
The SUV was impounded, and the woman was taken into custody for questioning. As of this writing, charges have not yet been formally announced, but police sources say the case is being treated as a “high-level criminal investigation.”
The Internet Erupts
Once the police bodycam footage went viral online, social media lit up with speculation, horror, and disbelief. Hashtags like #TrunkTruth, #NotLaundry, and #WhatWasInTheBag began trending within hours.
TikTok sleuths and YouTube crime commentators have already begun dissecting every frame of the footage, analyzing the woman’s body language and the officers’ reactions in slow motion. One TikToker even claimed to have identified the woman from a missing persons flyer back in April — though police have not confirmed any connection.
“It’s like something out of a movie,” one commenter wrote. “Except it’s real. And it’s terrifying.”
Authorities Urge Public to Stay Calm
While online speculation continues to grow, authorities are urging the public to avoid jumping to conclusions.
“This is a very sensitive and ongoing investigation,” said Sgt. Alyssa Morton during a press conference. “We ask that the public refrain from spreading misinformation. The facts will come out in due time.”
When pressed for more information, Morton declined to comment on what exactly was found inside the bag but confirmed that forensic analysis is underway, and the scene has been secured for further examination.
Was This a Cold Case Comeback?
Local journalists are now connecting dots between the incident and several unsolved missing persons cases in the region. In particular, a 2023 case involving a young woman who vanished under suspicious circumstances just miles from the highway where the SUV was stopped has gained renewed attention.
Could this roadside stop lead to long-awaited answers in a cold case?
Retired homicide detective Mark Hanley believes it’s possible.
“Sometimes the biggest breaks come from the smallest stops,” he said. “You’d be surprised how many major cases get cracked thanks to a busted taillight or an expired plate.”
What Happens Next?
The woman remains in police custody, though she has reportedly requested legal counsel and declined to answer further questions. A court appearance is expected in the coming days, and local prosecutors are working closely with investigators to determine the exact charges.
Meanwhile, residents in Jackson County are left rattled — not just by what was found in the trunk, but by the possibility that something so horrifying had been driving around unnoticed for months.
