Jimmy Kimmel’s Return Brings His Mom to Tears: ‘She Couldn’t Hide Her Pride’
Hollywood, CA — Jimmy Kimmel’s return to late-night television after a turbulent week of controversy proved to be a deeply moving moment—not just for viewers, but especially for his mother, Joan Kimmel, who was seen wiping away tears multiple times during the taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 23.
Kimmel, 57, stepped back onto the El Capitan Theatre stage just six days after ABC and The Walt Disney Company placed him and his entire staff on “indefinite” hiatus. The suspension followed remarks Kimmel made on the September 15 episode about the tragic death of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot at Utah Valley University on September 10.

The week was fraught with uncertainty and emotion for the Kimmel family. An audience member, Leesa Bates from Beaverton, Oregon, who sat next to Joan during the taping, described the scene to PEOPLE:
“I saw her wiping her eyes several times. She said that it was a rough week for everybody, and it was a really rough period. We’ve never experienced anything like that.”
Joan, joined by her husband, warned Bates before the show that she might become emotional.
“She said, ‘If I start to cry, I’m sorry.’ And I said, ‘No, if you start to cry, I’m going to start to cry.’ And we did. But it was very sweet. She’s a very nice lady.”
After the taping, Joan was visibly proud, giving her son a big hug and sharing a moment of relief and joy with her family.
Kimmel’s suspension came after affiliate broadcasters Nexstar and Sinclair announced they would preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! on their stations, condemning the host’s remarks about Kirk’s murder. The situation escalated when FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened action against ABC over criticism of President Donald Trump aired on the network.
ABC later reversed its decision, releasing a statement on September 22:
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Despite ABC’s reinstatement, Nexstar and Sinclair affiliates continued to block the show in many markets, and former President Trump criticized the network and Kimmel on Truth Social.

During his opening monologue, Kimmel became emotional, addressing the controversy directly and clarifying his intentions:
“I do wanna make something clear, because it’s important to me as a human, and that is, you understand that it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”
He spoke with compassion about Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, and her remarkable message of forgiveness for Tyler Robinson, the man charged with Kirk’s murder:
“Erika Kirk forgave the man who shot her husband. She forgave him. That is an example we should follow. If you believe in the teachings of Jesus as I do, there it was. That’s it. A selfless act of grace, forgiveness from a grieving widow.”
Kimmel’s voice broke as he reflected on the power of forgiveness, urging viewers to carry forward the lesson of grace rather than division.
He also addressed rumors about conditions for his return, jokingly reading a “statement” from Disney about reactivating streaming accounts, before reiterating his commitment to free speech and responsible commentary.
The mood inside the El Capitan Theatre was described as “monumental” by Bates, who was surprised to find herself seated next to Kimmel’s parents.
“It was just a very cool feeling in that whole place, knowing that this is pretty monumental.”
Joan’s pride and emotion were evident throughout the taping, culminating in a heartfelt embrace with her son.
Kimmel’s return was met with widespread support from fans and many in the industry, who praised his candor and empathy. Others, including President Trump, remained critical, questioning ABC’s decision and Kimmel’s talent.

Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night return was more than a television comeback—it was a moment of healing, reflection, and familial pride. As Kimmel and his mother embraced, the show’s audience and millions at home witnessed the personal toll of public controversy and the enduring strength of family in the face of adversity.
Through tears and laughter, Jimmy Kimmel’s return underscored the power of forgiveness and the importance of empathy in a divided time—a message embodied by both Erika Kirk’s grace and Joan Kimmel’s pride for her son.
