MiLaysia Fulwiley makes her feelings known on playing under Dawn Staley’s mentorship.

MiLaysia Fulwiley was a No. 13 ranked prospect in the 2023 class and drew much attention for her flashy skills and perfectly executed layups. The W.J. Keenan High School graduate chose to stay close to her home, Columbia, South Carolina, playing for Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks.

Fulwiley enjoyed a successful freshman season, averaging 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals. Her contribution was immense in South Carolina’s undefeated season run, ending with the 2024 NCAA championship win. In an interview with Greenville News, MiLaysia Fulwiley spoke about her decision to play for Dawn Staley.

“To to be able to play in a program as good as this, coached under one of the best coaches in the world and be home at the same time, it just means a lot,” Fulwiley said. “I just know that the younger version of myself would be so proud of how far I’ve come.

With the immense attention coming at such a young age, Fulwiley’s mother, Phea Mixon, wanted the guard to choose wisely and play for someone who would help her grow.

“You need someone that’s going to say no when the time is right,” Mixon said. “Transitioning to college and the WNBA, you have to be able to change and sacrifice some things … you need someone that’s going to hold you accountable.”

In line with her mother’s expectations, Dawn Staley played a steady role in helping MiLaysia Fulwiley navigate the expectations while still expanding her playing style. While some freshmen of her caliber would be immediately handed starting roles and longer minutes, Fulwiley had a much slower start, playing restricted minutes, in a bench role.

“You have to understand when and she’s getting to know that process,” Staley said. “I don’t expect her to understand it every play every game, I just want her aware of it … she’s not resisting it, she’s welcoming it because she wants more for herself. …

“It’s never been about ‘don’t do this’ it’s about ‘add this,’ and just complimenting what she already brings to the table.”

Now, in her sophomore season, MiLaysia Fulwiley is still playing restricted minutes as she struggles with consistency. However, the guard has shown promises of progress and will be returning to action on Sunday against Wofford. She is averaging 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists.
