ESPN recently released its updated WNBA rookie rankings, posting the Top 10 first-year players in the league.
When the popular network released its list just a few weeks ago, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was No. 1 in the rookie rankings. They now have Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark at No. 1, replacing the Sky star.
ESPN mentioned that Clark’s turnover struggles altered their opinion of the top rookies in the league. Their main issue was that Clark was leading the WNBA in turnovers and struggling to find consistency in her offensive game.
She still leads the league in turnovers, averaging 5.6 turnovers per game. ESPN explained that part of the issue has been Clark’s teammates dropping passes throughout the season, but they believe her IQ has increased.
“Clark’s vastly improved turnover rate is especially impressive to see, as that had been perhaps the single biggest reason why the metrics were comparatively down on her earlier in the season.” posted ESPN ($).
The game has slowed down for Clark. She leads the WNBA in average assists, with 8.4 per game.

Clark has also been an elite scorer, leading all rookies with 19.5 points per game. Throughout her rookie season, she’s shot 41.7% from the field, 34.1% from three-point range and 90.4% from the free throw line.
Her versatility has put the Fever in a position to compete for a WNBA title for the first time since 2016. They’ve also secured their first 20-win season since 2015, currently sitting at 20-19.
ESPN believes Clark’s improvement in turnovers has been an immense aid to the Fever, and her ability to create opportunities for her teammates has completely changed Indiana’s offense.
“The result has been a vastly improved Fever attack that went from No. 6 in the league to No. 1. A more efficient Clark has changed the entire complexion of Indiana’s offense,” ESPN added.
Clark and the Fever will have a chance to showcase that offensive attack on Sept. 19 when they play the Washington Mystics in their last regular-season game.
