Kanye West is opening up about what he claims caused the falling out between him and Jay-Z — and according to the controversial rapper, it has to do with politics.
In a since-deleted tweet originally shared on Sunday, April 20, West, 47, claimed that the drama stems from their collaboration on the song “Jail,” which appeared on West’s 2021 album, Donda.
“Why did Jay Z have to say ‘no red hat’ on Jail,” West wrote via X. “That s*** tore me to my soul. We fought about it and he told me either leave that line on there or take my verse off. Me wearing the red hat was the most stand out example of me going against ‘the program.’ Do you guys think he was instructed to say that?”
In Jay-Z’s verse on the track, he rapped, “Told him, ‘Stop all of that red cap, we goin’ home’ / Not me with all of these sins, castin’ stones / This might be the return of The Throne (Throne) / Hova and Yeezus, like Moses and Jesus.”
The lines were a reference to West’s support of President Donald Trump, which often involved the rapper wearing a red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap. “Jail” marked West and Jay-Z’s first collaboration in years following their 2011 collaborative album, Watch the Throne. While fans hoped that “Jail” indicated the duo would reunite for music, they have not collaborated again since.
Last month, West made headlines for additional tweets about Jay-Z, 55, and his wife, Beyoncé. After the couple’s twins Rumi and Sir, 7, were the subject of one of West’s X rants, Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles, came to her family’s defense. (Jay-Z and Beyoncé, 43, also share daughter Blue Ivy, 13.)
“Corny joke, time! ❤️ it’s hard to remain positive and classy in the face of ignorance and evil,” Knowles, 71, captioned a March Instagram video of her telling a joke. “But I know that no weapon formed against me or my family shall prosper.🙏🏽❤️ This battle is not mine, but the Lords, I know that God has got this.”
In the video, Knowles kept things light by sharing one of her trademark “corny” jokes with her followers. “What happens when a snowman throws a tantrum? He has a meltdown,” she quipped. “Y’all know that’s funny!”
Shortly after his tweets about Jay-Z’s kids, West apologized in additional X posts, writing, “I LOVE JAY Z AND I DO FEEL BAD.” He also claimed he was hurt by Jay-Z not attending his wedding to Kim Kardashian, whom he married in 2014.
“I FELT LIKE BOTH HIM AND HIS WIFE COULD HAVE HELPED ME HAVE MORE LEVERAGE WITH MY KIDS,” West continued, referring to his recent claims that he has been denied access to his four kids with Kardashian, 44. “THEY COULD HAVE USED THEIR CULTURAL POSITION TO NOT JUST WATCH THE KARDASHIANS RUN ME OVER. S*** HURTS … SO F*** BOTH OF THEM CAUSE WHEN I NEEDED THEM IT WAS F*** ME.”
