On a 4th-and-13 desperation play with 1:17 left in the Buffalo Bills’ 30-21 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes heaved a 50-yard pass to his longtime security blanket — tight end Travis Kelce.

Intercepted by linebacker Terrel Bernard, that pass was just one of four targets to Kelce.

And he caught just two of them for eight yards.

That’s a direct contrast to the last time the storied rivals met. In last year’s divisional playoff game won by the Chiefs, 27-24, Kelce was a huge factor, catching five passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

Kelce also scored the game-winning touchdown in the classic overtime divisional playoff game to cap the 2021 season, in which the Chiefs recorded a game-tying field goal despite getting the ball with just 13 seconds to play.

Much has been made of the potential demise of the 35-year-old Kelce. Perhaps the best to ever play tight end, he got off to a slow start this year, and some frivolously suggested that his relationship with Taylor Swift had distracted him.
