Connor McDavid’s post directed at Auston Matthews has fans going crazy over wild rumour!
The obscure post by the Oilers’ captain to the Leafs’ captain has got a lot of people talking:
On Thursday, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid created havoc on social media when he directed a post at Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews in what is a rare unprompted interaction on X. McDavid’s post simply tagged Matthews directly with the caption:
“crossbar and in, let’s see it.”
At this point, Matthews has not made any sort of response to the message. The Leafs’ captain aggravated an upper-body injury on Dec. 20 and has been placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.
As you can imagine, wild rumours took over social media with fans wondering, hoping, BEGGING that he could mean that McDavid will join Matthews in Toronto. Fans immediately started to post that the Oilers had made a trade with the Maple Leafs, finally bringing McDavid home.
McDavid, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026-27, starred for the Greater Toronto Hockey League’s Toronto Marlboros before earning exceptional status into the Ontario Hockey League and has been linked to crazy rumours involving the Maple Leafs ever since he joined the NHL. He has however never hinted at the idea of leaving the Oilers.
Another hypothesis was brought up, thanks to McDonald’s Canada who also took to X to post: ‘something’s about to change the game forever’ with the hockey stick emoji attached, and putting the handles of the two of the NHL’s best players.
The two captains could have been asked to remake a classic McDonald’s advertisement from the ‘90s that featured Wayne Gretzky and Mats Sundin.
This makes more sense if you ask me, though I admit, isn’t as fun.
