In a bombshell interview with Rolling Stone, the 66-year-old rocker opened up about the real reasons he walked away from the band in 2013 and revealed long-suspected tensions with frontman Jon Bon Jovi.
“I didn’t leave just because of my daughter or personal stuff,” Sambora said, referencing the commonly cited reason for his exit at the time. “There was a lot going on behind the scenes—creative control, ego, exhaustion—and yeah, a lack of respect.”

Fans have speculated for years about what really led to Sambora’s departure from the chart-topping rock group at the height of their modern revival. “Jon had this idea that Bon Jovi was just him. But that wasn’t the truth,” Sambora explained. “I was there building that sound with him from the beginning. We were a partnership, even if the spotlight mostly stayed on him. Over time, it just became more about control than collaboration.”
Sambora also criticized the direction the band took musically after his departure. “They lost a bit of soul. The sound became more manufactured, more about fitting into trends than telling real stories. That wasn’t the band we built.”
Perhaps the most shocking part of the interview came when Sambora revealed that he attempted to return to Bon Jovi multiple times—but was shut out. “I reached out. I wanted to talk. I was ready to come back. But there was no real effort from Jon to meet halfway.”
Despite the criticism, Sambora insisted that he doesn’t hate his former bandmate. “I don’t have bad blood—I have truth. I gave everything I had to that band. And I still love the music. But I needed to step away to find peace and to be the father my daughter needed.”
Sambora has spent the past several years focusing on solo projects and spending time with his daughter Ava, whom he shares with actress Heather Locklear. He’s recently hinted at releasing new music and says he’s open to reuniting with former bandmates—under the right circumstances.
So far, Jon Bon Jovi has not responded publicly to the interview, though sources close to the singer claim he was “disappointed but not surprised” by Sambora’s comments.
